Up to 2004 the 9-5 4 cyl had a tendency to sludge if not religiously maintained. Lease owners or people used to Hondas just followed the overly optimistic SAAB maintenance schedule and result is a sludged motor at 90 or 100K. Those folks rarely step up to full synthetic or oil changes every 5K unless they are a Saab nut and knew about the issues. Also many times the 2nd or 3rd owner is buying a car they couldn't normally afford (due to the low retained value) and they are used to changing oil on a Toyota or Honda every 10K, much less keeping up with a Euro car maintenance schedule, so they defer maintenance even more. The net result of all this is the 9-5 can be a risky bet as a used car, less concern on the 2004 and later because they came with full synthetic and PCV improvements. If you want pre-2004 look for a very well-maintained one with records.
