I have nearly 295K miles on my original GT-17 with no puffing of smoke. Sure I get one puff on start-up if the run time of the engine on its previous start/stop cycle was under a minute (changing spots in the driveway for example) but that is the only condition under which it happens.
I blame it on oil being pumped into the turbo's bearing box when everything is cold and loose. It sits there until the next start-up when it blows out into the exhaust stream. The shaft and sleeves grow enough with heat during normal time span start/stop cycles to prevent this from happening at other times.
