I bought the car with 170K miles on it and it still had the original shocks, basically shot. So, I can't really compare it to the way it felt 10 years ago. I can say that with the new Bilteins on (front and rear), the 9-5 still has the smoothest ride of any Saab I've owned. I live in Northern Virgina, and with all the road construction and freezes we had, there are plenty of opportunities to test the suspension compliance on a daily basis. The car is not as stiff as my relatively new (2005) 9-3 Linear, if that is any help. As far as Koni's go, I had them on an ancient 99, and they were good, although I had to take them off to readjust them get the settings right when I first installed them.
When I was looking for shocks, the Koni's were about a $100 more, and the FSD's a $100 more than that. I couldn't justify the extra cost. I was also able to use a coupon to get the price down to under $500 for the set of Bilsteins, which sealed the deal.
