The 99 really got grumpy pinging and low boost on regular, esp in summer with A/C and the mileage dropped MORE than the cost of premium - went back to premium next year and thereafter.
Next is the 04 Arc with 220hp engine, and optional regular or super -
regular and it ran like the 185 hp engine - could see exactly where the boost went on this car, and it was short of the red mark and you could feel it -
once premium went in, within 100 miles the car boosted clear to the red line with no pinging - didn't seem to affect mileage so direct tradeoff of grade for power (unlike the earlier one) - this may not last with age though!
Finally the Aero - it HATES low grade gas- it does run, but that's about it -
SO my clear assessment is that you can use regular but it doesn't save much in the end unless you never use the throttle to full capacity, it's there if you have to use 87 octane -
Also - never use less than 87 esp at higher altitudes where they sell 86 or 85 (this would be one place to get mid-grade 88 - but don't bother with mid-grade otherwise, the 89 acts just like 87 at lower altitudes so you're just wasting money...) -
Where the newer cars are able to really use different grades is with the newer computer controls AND direct injection - these really will run with less power but the same mpg on different grades of gas.
So that only applies to the 2010 or 2011 cars
