I honestly think this was GM's plan all along. My mechanics agree. By selling and becoming a minority owner, GM could still control the company and sabotage any investor interest, but now will have no responsibility for providing parts for current OR past models.
Not to mention they could then delay the 9-4x in favor of the Caddie, remove the 9-5 as Buick's potential Chinese competition, etc. Sure Saab is small compared to GM, but so was the LA subway system. Corporate cultures can endure for decades.
Maybe some of us will be able to order parts from BAIC at some point since they bought the old tooling and are building with it. I wonder about that.
(OTOH, why wouldn't someone want one to buy of the most advanced new car factories in the world?)
That said, I've sold my 2002 and am on a mission to make my 2000 9-5 look better than new... People still think it's only a few years old since they rarely know Saabs.
