I'll second the choice of an '04 - '05 9-5. I did a lot of research and then looked for six months before settling on a replacement family wagon. As other posts have stated; 2004 is a good year as many issues were corrected. We finally got an '04 Aero Sport Combi.
We've had it for about 8 months / 10,000 miles. I replaced: rear shocks/springs/brakes, Crank Position Sensor, Tires, cracked PCV Valve Tube, Trans Fluid, and a few bulbs.
It is the best highway car we've ever had. That's saying something as predecessors have included BMWs, Volvos, an Audi, and Porsches. It has the comfort of an Audi with the handling of a BMW and acceleration of a mid-'80s 911 - without the reliability / maintenance headaches associated with those cars.
Take your time and find a well-maintained, nicely optioned example. Budget an additional $1,500 to set it straight and you'll be happy.
