Roger is right - check that car over carefully. There may be things "wrong" that matter less for a 21 year old needing cheap transportation (shocks etc), but sludge is a doozy. Ultimately, the 9-5 is not cheap transportation, but it is very safe, and a good bet to put a kid in for that reason. I have 2 c900's and a 9-5, and the 9-5 repairs tend to be more costly. That said, there are many c900 owners on this bb + the 9-5 is relatively DIY friendly, so if you/your son are up for that, you can keep the maintenance costs down.
$1500 is the upper end of what an otherwise impeccable 9-5 might go for with a bad engine, so there's at least not a whole lot of $$ to lose (depending on condition)...
