I inserted the adapter into the rear bung only a thread or two. Then I inserted the O2 sensor into the adapter only a thread or two. I needed the slight flexibility these barely engaged threads offered to get the parts properly aligned without the O2 sensor interfering with the rear engine mount.
After both were aligned I was able to fully tighten both devices.
