Some very low-end video projectors may use halogen bulbs. But I have owned 2 DLP and one LCD projector, and we have 4 DLP projectors here at work, all midrange business models, and all of them use gas-discharge bulbs. There are some detail differences (like the gas or mix of gases used) but it's the same technology used in HID headlights - an arc discharge vs. a filament. And the failure modes are the same.
And I know what Saabsince93b meant, the point that I and others are trying to make here is depending on where you get it (and luck), the bulb in that box marked "Osram" or "Sylvania" may not actually be made by Osram or Sylvania, it may be a poorer-quality Chinese copy.
