'05 Arc Wagon Starting Problem

Our '05 Arc wagon (115,00 mi.) has had myriad problems, but starting (until now) hasn't been one of them. Symptom: engine will crank, but not fire. However, if cold weather start technique suggested in the manual is used (crank a few seconds with accelerator depressed, then crank normally), it will fire. Noticed a slight delay in starter response with one key when it failed to start, but not with the spare. No non-recognition messages displayed.
Two trips to our Saab specialist, first via roll-off (we didn't use the cold crank method). He gets no codes and doesn't want to start tinkering without more information. It fired from cold two days running at the shop (don't they all mind their manners at the shop?) after mal-performing two days running in our garage. Once started it runs perfectly. It has been religiously maintained and repaired (too frequently) since new.
Theories any one?
