Hey all,
Have owned a 2002 9-5 for about 2 years now. Just hit 152k the other day. Anyway, about 8 months ago I started experiencing weird electrical symptoms when the car was turned off.
Specifically, I would take the key out of the ignition, get out, and when I went to lock the vehicle from the FOB it wouldn't chirp. Oh boy! I would go back into the car to discover that all of the electronics were out, no dome light, nothing. If I held the key really close to the SID and hit the lock/unlock I would get a chirp, but no movement on the locks.
What really scared me is what occurred when I tried to start it again. Of course, the car wouldn't start (wouldn't even crank). But when I moved the key back to the off position, all of the meters on the dash would oscillate slightly upwards and then quickly bounce back to nothingness. I was able to recreate this weird oscillation if I left the key in the "on" position and turned the lights on or off, turned the windshields wipers on, turn the rear fog on, etc.
So this went on to a point where I removed the ignition and gave it a good cleaning. For a while, this worked, but then one day I was out and the symptoms returned - I was stranded at a strip mall. I remember thinking that my future had a replacement for the electrical portion of the ignition switch in store.
But no fast! Luckily, I caught a guy to jump me. He had one of those built-in battery chargers you buy from Wal-Mart in his car. We connected the positive jumper cable to the battery and then the negative to a grounded hunk of metal under the hood (he was scared he would "blow up" my battery). My car started, I drove away, and to this day I have not re-experienced the weird issue described here.
Any theories on why this is so? I can say that there was no major change in the weather patterns/temperature; no major repairs; and no other apparent issues.
