High Heat, Low Coolant Warning

Here in the northeast, under oppressive humidity and heat, my 2002 9-5 Aero two days ago delivered a rather sudden warning to add coolant. With hundreds of thousands of Aero miles – previously in a 9000 – my first thought was heater core, followed by water pump. However, after driving only in a several mile radius, I noticed a football-sized area of what definitely felt like coolant on the ground just below the battery area. Is that the water-pump vicinity, anyone know?
Also troubling here is that with all this heat and an engine fully warm quickly, the coolant level never rises above the halfway point, where I topped it. In fact, I could swear it actually drops.
I’m seeking input because I need to travel 235 miles to metro Washington, DC tomorrow, Labor Day. There are many good SAAB mechanics in that area compared to barely any here in metro Pittsburgh, PA. But dare I travel that far, particularly with hot weather remaining tomorrow? Or should I use an alternative vehicle that’s available to me – that being my late father’s 2001 Volvo S40 with only 40K on it?
