Swedecar, exactly right - I didn't have a socket that fit the seal's diameter. I have a thick-wall 32MM super heavy duty 6-point but it was too large. The correct 12-point socket would have been the perfect tool. So the job is done. Hopefully I got it right. The last shop that did the timing belt at 60K screwed up the bolt hole for the front bracket used to hoist the engine plus it holds the dipstick tube and extension pipe for the inlet to the thermostat housing. When I got the car back from the first belt job, that hoist bracket was flopping in the breeze. I asked them to tighten it back up and they said it wouldn't hurt anything. They also installed the wrong spark plugs during the same job which caused the car to barely run. I left the car with them to get the correct plugs installed and the bracket tightened but it was still loose when I got it back. So at least I had the opportunity to correct that loose bolt - I thought - except - the threads in the head are stripped out - Yuck. Maybe if I feel really patient someday, I can try to fix the stripped hole. Very hard to even see the threaded hole so probably not too fun to repair. Doing the cam-belt would be easier the second time I'm sure.
