Unless the '01 is an Aero with a stick, you could have issues.
By 2004 the Aisin 5 speed automatic becomes a viable alternative.
Also, the Arc level gets the 2.3 liter iron block with all the goodies from the Aero line - but you get stock ride height and less issues of sagging.
A lot of the issues around direct ignition cassettes and crankcase ventilation are resolved.
The rest of the 9-5 quirks you put up with, because the car has gobs of torque and riding 600 miles in one day is a breeze. Better seats.
The later 9-5s are not "GM" though they use parts from their bins. The NG 9-3 really is a GM product for all intents and purposes and I can't warm to them.
