I've probably changed my t-stat about every other year, it seems; unfortunately one of the most common jobs I've had to tackle on my 9-5. The car should be up to temp when I get on the freeway every morning, but when it is still not up to temp when I get to work, that's my signal that the thermostat is going out. and when the temp gauge dies, it's still just the t-stat. and the CEL means that I should have gotten around to fixing it already. I've tried a different brand each time, I think. The Wahler did seem to last a bit longer, and didn't look obviously bad when I swapped it out (like some other brands), but it still wouldn't get the car up to temp consistently anymore.
The first time I did the job, I also replaced the temp sensor, but it didn't fix the problem, and ever since then, replacing the t-stat has done the trick.
