Not sure that CPS failing would affect crank speed as much as whether or not the engine fires when cranked.
Given the age of the car, my bet is with Paul - battery cable or battery, or both. I agree that 2 year failure is not unheard of, especially if a bum cable is potentially compromising the quality of the charge of the battery.
