I'm not sure what Mark meant but here is what happened to me. A car of mine was totaled in an accident. The insurance company offered me X but then raised the offer to about X + 2000 when I showed a receipt for a recent transmission rebuild. They raised it about 150 more when I showed receipts for a recent oil change that I did myself on the premise of a "well-maintained" car. They rejected my request for a bump in value for a 6-week old catalytic converter.
My opinion is that it is all related to how much they can sell the wrecked car, and its pieces, for. The new transmission is worth something in the salvage market. Same for a well-maintained engine. A catalytic converter is worth nothing (at least in California) because of laws that prohibit installation of anything but new converters.
