You left out a very important piece of information: What exactly is the problem and the diagnosis??
Have you maintained (by the book) the maintenance items?
Is it the clutch or the transmission?
Regarding maintenance, if you basically drove it and now you have this problem, chances are if you repair it the other maintenance items will pop up and your car is now a piggy bank.
If well maintained, and you know the 'warts' so to speak, 2k for another 40-50K (until the next major failure) seems like a reasonable expenditure.
Basically, with saabs, if the degree of intimacy is your hand on the wheel and other on the stick, (and you don't know what a wrench looks like), well then get a new one.
Given the broad generalization of the issue from the mechanic: transmission and it will cost 2K, I'd get another mechanic. A saab mechanic.
