I really feel that very deep open directional treads are useful in snow/slush, and if you can combine that with studs for ice, the package is perfect. Most modern snow tires need to maximize contact area for siping for ice control, and with wider tires, that seems to be at the expense of snow/slush clearing. Here is the Hakka4 like on my c900:
Here is the R. Tread depth is the same, but clearance paths are more nebulous. FWIW, hakka 7 paths are kind of less clean also.
With the 8 and the R2, Nokian has gone back to something more like the days of 4/5
