Start with cold/cool engine and get good line of sight to bottom of the thermostat. If it is wet, wipe it very dry - then start up car and run a little (careful not too much). Turn off and let cool. Get clean and dry towel to the bottom of the thermostat and see if is wet. If the thermostat gasket is leaking, this is a good time to change the thermostat along with the gasket. If this is the issue check the housing and motor for corrosion/erosion.
If the thermostat is not your problem, remove battery (for better access and sight) and inspect the left back side of the block along with the coolant hoses.
Good luck - post when you find the culprit.
Mark in Marine.
