Just repeated this work on the 2004 Aero Wagon. Nothing much to add. Use the method of running the engine during the drain. Got 1 gallon and 3/4 quart on first draining. So in the end, added that much oil for final fill and after a 1/2 hour drive, ATF level was right between the marks. The owners manual explains the procedure for checking the ATF level.
I ran the engine on the jacks to distribute and heat up ATF through the tranny and moved to drive and reverse to get oil moving around for the intermediate fills. This creates a ABS warning light because the back wheels are not turning. After driving less that 100 feet the ABS warning goes away. So don't panic. [You can determine if you think that your jacks or stands are secure for this.]
You really need a funnel that works right. I have one that I keep clean and sealed in a xip-lock freezer bag.
Job does not need to be messy. I did the whole job with two shop towels. One for wiping grimy bits and one for clean work on dip stick and final drain plug wipes. Don't get started without three gallon jugs for the old fluid.
