I replaced my troublesome throttle body today.
Took 1 hour 5 minutes.
The difficulties were:
-Clips on hoses were all oriented wrong for access.
-The clips were difficult to open with pliers and then difficult to move over to get off of the hose barbs. You can't use typical hose clamp tools.
-The limp home solenoid plug was very difficult to remove, I have to pry the wire spring out from the body to get it off. Getting its rubber boot moved was also difficult.
-The main wiring plug's red slider clip would not move because of normal road grit. I put some water on it and that may have helped.
The 10mm bolts were not very tight. The lower one on the black steel shield was finger loose.
Vac lines were still pliable and a screw driver easily got them eased off. Same for coolant lines once clips were moved.
Getting the rubber 0-ring type gasket at the bottom of the TB to stay in place was not happening. I used some double sided adhesive film, which is sticky adhesive only. Don't know what others would do. Perhaps some grease.
No need to put hose clamps on the coolant lines, lift the TB and remove these last so they are higher and then route under some things close to the valve cover to keep ends elevated. I had around one teaspoon of coolant on the floor. I did open and close the reservoir first to equalize pressure.
So removal is hard, refit seemed easy.
Battery was discon during surgery and start up was uneventful.
Tools:
13mm for bolt holding throttle feed duct at front of the engine
10mm for battery terminal
10mm for throttle body and black steel shield
7mm for hose clamp on top of TB for feed pipe
small and medium flat screw drivers
various pliers
flash light
extendable magnetic pickup stick
Difficulty rating: 2 beers, because of problems removing hoses and terminal plugs.
2003 Aero Wagon 2.3L 97k miles
Problems leading to this: Intermittent surging/stalling at start up. Some odd wonky throttle response events on the road. Did not have any CEL's or limp-home solenoid trip events.
I will post-mortem the TB internals some day.
