Common Transponder Key for Multiple Cars Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Mon, 6 Jul 2015 13:22:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A 2005 post by John Schreiber (per link below) outlined the prudence of buying an extra ignition key head (Saab P/N 5040613) and programming it as a contingency spare.
This got me thinking as to whether a common transponder chip can be used to start two or more 9-5's. Since the transponder chip has no memory, it seems to me that the following TWICE key reprogramming procedure should work:
1) Remove the chip from the newly acquired key head, and set it aside.
2) Reprogram all the keys associated with the first car. Before the sequence is complete, remove the chip from the last reprogrammed key, insert the newly acquired chip and then continue with the reprogramming sequence to completion.
3) Now swap the chip from the last reprogrammed key, such that the old chip is reinserted and the newly acquired chip is set aside again.
4) Repeat steps 2 - 3 with the second car. Afterwards, place the newly acquired chip in a safe location.
Those of us who have a fleet of two (or more) first-generation 9-5's in our household now have an economical, common pre-programmed key transponder that can be called into service at a moment's notice, only requiring joining with an inexpensive, easily procured cut key specific to the vehicle.
