That's been my experience, Bill. in nearly 14 years, I am on my 4th set, but probably would only be on my 3rd if Bambi hadn't helped me replace the headlight lenses a couple of years or so ago.
I changed them myself. It is not difficult, you just need to be careful and not in a rush.
Drivers side is most easily accessible if you remove the battery. Then open the circular cover on the back of the headlamp housing. Stop and take a good look at the lay of the land in there (or look at the picture in the manual). Then release the spring clip holding the square base of the Xenon, pull the base straight back. Once the bulb is clear, unplug the wire, and removal is complete.
Installing is the opposite, being very careful to not touch anything but the base of the bulb. and ensuring you carefully align the bulb with the hole and slowly push it straight into the housing.
Passenger side is similar. I take the MAF out to get a little more room (I have big hands!), and otherwise proceed as you did for the drivers side. While its out you might as well spray the MAF down with MAF cleaner and let it dry while you fiddle with the lights.
Consider changing the "peanut" bulb and high-beam halogen while you are in there.
