Loud Single Clunk Noise Upon Reverse Turn Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Thu, 3 Dec 2015 19:57:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This past summer I overhauled and refurbished the *entire* front end of my '99 SE (@175K mi.), including the drive axles and CV joints. (The only components I did not touch were the wheel hub bearings and the steering rack.) I'm experiencing an annoying single clunk or pop noise from the front suspension, only when reversing out of a parking space with the steering turned hard right or left. But for this single noise, the front suspension performance would be nominal.
Searching through earlier posts, others have attributed this problem to the sudden release of stored mechanical energy, e.g.,
- wound-up spring energy due to sticking thrust bearing (but I replaced those)
- failing ball joint (but I replaced those)
- failing tie rod end (but I replaced those)
- steering rack binding
- loose wheel bearings
- binding rear bushing of control arm
Suggestions on how to quickly diagnose this without going down the rabbit hole would be sincerely appreciated.
