I found that using an old credit card, or better yet, similar size/weight, but smooth on both sides (my old work ID works well) is helpful.
Pushing it under the center of the cubby releases the catch, and leaving it in place while sliding the cubby out protects the trim.
Personally, I prefer the look of the little green bulbs over the LEDs. But then again I hate the red backlight dash of my wife's GMC Terrain, so it may just be that I like the soft green overall.
