1999 9-5 starting problem

I am looking for some advice with regard to starting problems that I am experiencing with my 1999 9-5 2.3 LPT station wagon. (Current milage ~240k miles.)
Most of the time the car starts w/o issues but on a recent North California camping trip starting became such a problem that I decided to shorten the trip being afraid that I might need to tow it back to the San Francisco Bay Area where I live.
Here is what I know:
- the starter (original) cranks w/o issues
- Interstate car battery like new (checked by Interstate rep)
- ignition lock new
- ECU recently replaced+ new key (the old one was giving KEY NOT ACCEPTED)
- crankshaft position sensor (CPS) is new
- fuel pump (not original) > 4 years old
- once the car starts, you can drive it w/o issues for hours
- pumping the gas pedal when cranking helps the engine "catch" and start firing
- problem may occur on cold engine (in the morning) and warm engine (e.g., after a 3 hr long hike)
- fuel pressure regulator replaced about a year ago
- car regularly serviced but another 30k service is coming up
- SAAB ignition cassette is rather old (do not have exact data but I'd guess 3-4 years, > 50K+ miles on it)
- no CEL light
- when driving occasionally the fuel gauge indicator goes to empty even though there is fuel in the tank and few secs later goes back up to correct state, fuel pump continues working, no problem when driving
- once engine starts, it runs smoothly
- when the start problem is occurring, continuing to crank will most of the time start it up; but it may take several attempts to start at the risk of discharging the battery
- switching ignition to ON before starting to crank (should turn on fuel pump for few secs to pressurize the fuel line) does not seem to help
Any ideas what I should check for?
Thank you in advance,
-AlexS
