How does the auto-dimming rearview mirror work?

I finally got around of replacing the standard rearview mirror with an auto-dimming one. I made all the electrical connections and it kinda works. I say "kinda" because when blocking the sensor on the back and shining a bright light in front of the sensor in the mirror itself, it will immediately dim if I press the "Auto" button at the bottom.
Is this how it's supposed to work? i had auto-dimming rearview mirrors in other cars and they would work automatically but that one doesn't seem to work until the "Auto" button is depressed. Is this how it's supposed to work?
