I fought with the stock radio (2003) for a long while (many days, 5-10mins trying to tease it out, pulling from behind with my hand), didn't want to break facia of dash.
Walmart radio removal tool worked once but never again which led me to try try again. After 2 weeks, today, I got frustrated and used a crowbar! This method is fullproof and takes about 5s.
1) Remove SID (instructions for that are on site)
2) Use Walmart DIN Saab/Ford radio removal tool (metal rod with metal tip nudging inward). Place tool so that metal tip is facing inward (into the radio) on each side. Push straight in until you hear a click.
3) Put crowbar (e.g. 1.5ft) in where SID was and have crow end come down towards back of radio
4) Push metal rods outward (to the left on the left, and the right on the right). I used my left hand on the left rod, and my foot on the right rod. This will engage the mechanism to allow the radio to come out.
5) At the same time as 4) pull on crowbar (e.g. with right hand) and this will apply enough pressure from behind to have the radio come out. The facia of the dash make creak a bit but if the crowbar is actually pushing the radio you will see it break free.
