Another source of small leaks and smell is the radiator. It has side tanks that are crimped onto the aluminum body. The seals on the side tanks eventually leak and will result in a slight coolant loss, but since the leak can be over a large surface area they'll more readily produce the typical coolant smell. My experience has been that radiators like this typically begin to seep around 150,000 mile or 12 years.
One way to lower the incidence of bypass valve failure is to simply disconnect the vacuum line that leads to it. There is information on this board about that. There are internal sharp edges that diminish its service life. Once the vacuum is disconnected the life of the valve is only limited by how long the plastic body survives before it cracks.
