The 9-3 problem was presented as corrosion related to debris and water trapped in lower spring seat, at one point there was a 10 year warranty extension for this, have seen the bulletin. The bad 9-5 springs are probably from GM shared platform and its suppliers.
I do not know how the 9-3 front struts changed, but in the NG900 era, the spring travel before the struts hit the bump stops was low, so the springs saw limited deflections. On hard corners you would be on the bump stops. I cut off half off of those bump stops and the ride was improved and there was more travel and the shocks were then able to dissipate more force.travel. When you bottomed out on the bump stops, pot holes etc could then easily take out the rims.
