A running engine is an ignition source. Some DIY refuellers overfill and dribble gasoline down the fender releasing gasoline vapor. Some garden machinery owners fill gasoline containers with a few spills. When fumes meet ignition source, poof!
Back in the day, I was a young mechanic and pumped gas when the bell rang. If the engine was running, "Pardon me Ma'am (Sir), could you please turn off the motor so I can check your oil while your tank is filling?" Then I filled it with leaded fuel. Around 25 cents a gallon.
Better to have a cup of coffee while the car is cooling. Fire safety is not aspirational.
