I've seen a CPS that was apparently bad, where there was action showing on the tach during cranking. That is, the car was acting up and the CPS was replaced and the car was trouble free for quite some time after. I think asking a CPS to work well after 12 years and 207,000 miles of use is just asking too much - replace CPS if for no reason other than peace of mind.
But I will say, on our '01 Aero, the replacement of the Positive Side battery cable was the single best decision I ever made on this car. Just a variety of niggling electronic issues over years, but since I replaced this cable two years ago, it is like a different car.
