Oh I was and try to remain hopelessly optimistic and a huge Saab fan the one that really bashed the V-6 is the local Saab god (A TRUE fan has done naught but Saab for 40+ years and is booked 3 weeks in advance ! -This seven years since Saab made a car ! ) I hang out at his shop sometimes and feel privileged but he considers me a mechanic, which I am, er was, am again ! ( I supported myself thru university as a mechanic, worked as a teacher for 20+ years, now "retired" I'm at it again ! I have seen many v-6 in his shop and for a plethora of repairs and they are difficult to work on, access, (esp compared to the 4 cyl) and require more work, more often than the 4 so Saab god had told me once if I got a v-6 he would "hate me " (somewhat in jest ) basically What he's saying is the 4 is the best engine they ever made.( largely I feel as the other, some say "better" half of Saab- Scania The Scania DEISEL engineers were deeply involved in its design and execution! - they consulted on the development ) Recall, realize mechanics become cynical as they fix what breaks and so their, AND our / your experience may not be typical! They are working w/ a skewed. Nonrepresentative population of cars that got sick. broke down Reminds me of ol' Sigmund Freud who based his theory on a couple dozen "hysterical " women (can we blame Victorian era, women, if they became "hysterical "? ) so a theory based on abnormality NOT normality ! an apt analogy I posit!
