I thought the 2006+ 9-3 V6 was a totally different (and very good) engine than the 9-5 v6. Either takes up more space than a 4 and is considered a bit harder to work on as a result.
I think the social media comments are a bit over the top. If you search the v6 on this bb, you will see lots of negative opinions also (largely from people who don't own the v6), as well as some well thought out positive/neutral comments from folks who own the v6. I don't own the v6 and would not encourage someone to specifically look for one, but if you have one, I don't think it should be a huge problem to own. To be fair, my saab tech would say to avoid it also but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable to own.
Personally, I really like the 2.0L turbo from the c900 era. 2.3L is a little bit too much volume displaced for a 4 and the 9-5 gaskets are thinner, and lots of little issues came up in the early years (1999-2003) on that engine (eg sludge, headbolts, etc). Everyone has their opinion of which engine they like best, but it does not mean that the others are a huge problem either. I don't like the old 2.1L but I have one of those and it still works fine...
