Here is what I believe to be the problem: My NAPA thermostat housing on the V6 lacks an air bleeder as part of the thermostat. So I think what is happening is the water-pump area of the block gets air-locked. So after I replace the pump and fill up the coolant, the new pump is not adequately submerged in water/coolant, if at all. Running the car for the block to heat and the stat to open is burning up the water pump's seal. I spoke to a Support Technician at A/C Delco. He said this phenomenon is a very common water pump killer, costing them many warranty claims. He said within 3 - 5 minutes of running the pump dry will cause the seal temperature to exceed 300 degrees. At that point - it's over. He also looked up several suppliers of thermostat housings for the SAAB/Saturn/Catera 3.0 and was surprised and also disappointed how many of the aftermarket stats do not have the little air bleeder check valve. So I'm ordering parts including a thermostat housing. If the new housing's stat doesn't have an air bleeder, I'll have to improvise.
What are your thoughts of the discussion with AC/Delco? It really makes a lot of sense to me.
