Mark,
Thanks for the advice. Swapping my wheels/tires with a friend's relatively new Michelins, as he swaps to his summer tires, for a test drive first. If it is the tires, then off to the tire store for at least new fronts.
I've never had to replace a wheel bearing before on four previous SAABs, but with all of the outsourcing to China, I thought that could be the issue. But the fact that the sound doesn't change in turns, and your high mileage experience, kind ofconfirms it is probably the tires.
I'm thinking the high mileage (advertised 60-70k) Contis make more noise when they wear. The previous set of Conti ExtremeContact All Seasons went almost 40,000 miles to the wear bars with no noise or wear pattern issues. I should have stuck with that model tire rather than go for the high mileage one.
I was given advice by a SAAB specialist to avoid tire brands with V shaped tread patterns on SAABs as that can cause noise issues, but the Contis are the regular ribbed design, so it may be the high mileage compound.
Will post back when resolved this weekend.
