edit: I would use a socket that matches the number of faces on the fastener - 12 for 12, 6 for 6 where I could, especially when high torque is involved. I would also make sure it’s a quality socket.
Generic hardware store sockets can be sketchy in hardness and quality, and you could find yourself rounding off the inside of the socket and the nut or bolt head., especially if you are using 12 points on a 6 point nut/bolt, or tolerances are not up to snuff on the socket.
