It's easy to strip out the threads in the head with a busted stud. Using to big of a drill bit will take the threads out in a heartbeat. There is an operation you can do if the treads are gone. Use a drill tread tap set and spin new threads in the hole. It will require one size larger bolt when done. For sure worth it rather than the cost of a head gasket, new head. The larger bolt that will fit the hole won't be able to fit through the exhaust manifold hole. You'll have to drill the hold larger in the manifold for that hole. Spinning new threads in a striped out hole is cake compared to drilling a busted stud.
When drilling a busted stud the super small drill bit needs to be dead center of the busted stud and straight. The larger left hand drill bit will take the path of the pilot hole. Makes me wonder how it was possible for the mechanic to drill out the threads. There are radiator coolant holes in the head that run between the holes the studs are in.
If the mechanic was off with the drill from being center of the busted stud or drilled in at a angle it's very possible to drill into the head and punch a coolant tube. But you'd have a major leak with the stud/bolt removed, or he simply over torqued the bolt but I kind of doubt it being I put 30lb of torque on mine when they require half that. Definitely doesn't sound good no matter which way you look at it.
