As much as we vale and preserve our Saabs, their designers and builders thought even more of preserving the drivers and passengers of their automobiles. I'm glad you made it out alive and not maimed. Looking forward to catching up with you at a future SOC too.
I have driven on PCH countless times and understand (and have personally witnessed) how dangerous it can be.
There are a few scenarios in commuting that make me prefer to continue driving my Saab:
- driving in the diamond line, with a concrete K-rail to my left and a miles-long stack of cars in the #2 lane to my right
- driving in a single-lane, high-altitude freeway interchange overpass
- being rear-ended or clipped by a reckless lane-changer while driving at nominal freeway speed
When I was younger, I used to dislike the concept of a crashworthy unibody car. Now I get it.
About the only credible scenario I think the Saab would fail in a crash situation would be getting t-boned by a highly lifted pickup truck.
