Gauges are useful as tools to see if the compressor is cycling properly, and if pressures on high and low side make sense when the fans kick on, etc. but they don't seem to be as reliable as fill/replenishment tools for these systems.
IMO its more important as a start to make sure the system is at capacity by weight, and then see how its working. The freon sniffer is useful, although the dye can at least get you into the neighborhood of the leak pretty quickly with an eyeball.
Just my view -- others may have different experiences
