Like Dave said, these are great cars. They do require proper care and feeding (appropriate spec 0w40 full synthetic among other things) and there will be likely be some issues on any used purchase (rear suspension, cooling system leaks (rad, water pump, bypass valve - delete that with hoses), vacuum leaks (replace old hose - it biodegrades) etc... but most of this is diy friendly. The biggest factors to look for are rust, and a proper service history, especially wrt oil changes. 2004+ is a little bit safer bet in have probably been maintained decently if they are in good shape and may have less concern wrt sludge (can test by dropping the pan)...
Eeuroparts is your friend. I have not had trouble getting parts for our 2 9-5's but tbh, I have not had too much difficulty getting what I need for our c900's either.
Compared to a Volvo or Subaru, well those are very different... More fun than the Volvo. More solidly built than a Subie (which really do not have the same sort of driving dynamics as European vehicles). The comparatively sized Subarus are not that exciting to drive either. The 9-5 has lots in common with the 9-5 in terms of highway passing behaviour etc. I think you will like it. Good luck!
