Opinions / advice on replacing front wheel bearing(s) ? Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Thu, 23 May 2019 08:53:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have the luxury of longer-term planning regarding some work on one of my daughters' cars. The patient is a 2006 SC automatic w. Sport (Aero) suspension, and it's at 136K miles. I have two daughters with very similar '06 9-5 SC's, and this one belongs to the one who hears everything. I went over the car rather thoroughly when first purchased at 93K miles - no sludge in sump, new struts/shocks, CPS, SEM DIC, front subframe bushings, new WP and hoses, etc.
Now it's had a bit of noise from the RF wheel since last September (4500 mi ago), and the noise has gotten more noticeable with time. Mostly under light throttle at higher speeds, and increases in left turn, decreases in right turns.
So after several listening sessions, I'm ready to replace a front wheel bearing assembly. I replaced a RF wheel bearing on my old 1999 SE, which only solved half of the problem - turned out it needed an intermediate axle shaft (IMAS) bearing as well. With that in mind, I am contemplating replacing BOTH front wheel bearings AND the the IAMS bearing all in one go.
My rationale is that since I have troubles getting access to her car for any extensive maintenance jobs, I might as well get multiple things out of the way at the same time. I would not do this if I were having a shop do the work, since the probability is that I am replacing at least one, and maybe two bearings that aren't really worn out yet.
The car is in generally very good to excellent shape mechanically, with average body. She will drive it for quite a while yet, since she's just starting a new educational program.
Opinions ? Advice ?
Thanks !

P.S. I have two transmission (auto) transmission seals, one new SAAB axle nut, two wheel bearing assemblies and an IMAS bearing. I have tools to press that bearing.
