It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure you push the round connector through a hole in the wheel well into the engine compartment. The connecter plugs into its mate that is buried in the cable bundle that runs along the side of the wheel well underneath the hood. I can't remember how hard it was to get to that round connector, but you should be able to feel the bump in the bundle as you trace the wires. You can then decide what you need to remove to the get to the connector.
I don't remember disassembling the connector, but I think it was a very tight fit getting the round connector through the hole.
