Maybe it is better to speak of the Front and of the Rear steel lines. If the hole is in the Front line, that should be pretty easy to access and replace with new. The Rear line is very hard to get at and dropping the subframe appears necessary. However, in my case the hole, although on the Rear line, was right behind the coupling. I bought some flaring tools, cut the line directly behind the bad spot, reinstalled the coupling nut and new O ring on the salvaged line, did a new flare (a fluted shape)and put the new connection together and it doesn't leak. But now the line is altogether 1/2 inches shorter than it is supposed to be.
Someday, I may drop that subframe to replace the Rear line but I'll also have a long list of "to-do" items including new subframe bushings, maybe a fresh alternator and rear engine mount. Might even replace the timing chain and gears at the same time.
