I have found isopropyl alcohol used on a paper towel followed by a good glass cleaner does remove the film. I believe the film may be a combination of plasticizers from the interior of the car and air pollution (diesel exhaust, etc.) from the outside. Auto parts stores have rolls of blue paper towels specifically for glass. These are not to be confused with the blue shop towels. I like Stoner Invisible Glass as a glass cleaner. Other common glass cleaners tend to leave a film.
