When this problem started to pop up on the 9-3 model and other GM cars, GM had a bulletin out saying that the problem was related to gasoline quality (maybe sulfur content) and that's why the sensor went bad due to deposit build up.
If that is true or not, I don't know but what I do know when starting to take the sensors apart on the many 9-3 models. I found that the brass fingers are so thin that after sliding up and down over the resistor element for a few years, they wear off.
That's why the gauge acts up at full because the fingers goes off the grid for a little while as you can see the black streaks on the plastic.
Maybe some gasoline brands have more abrasive particles in it than others and if so, you would suspect it would be low cost brands compared to high.
