I shopped quite a while for my current 9-5. Every single one I saw, except the one I got, needed obvious repairs. And it turned out the one I got, despite outward appearances, a maintenance binder an inch thick, and a clean bill of health from a mechanic, also needed over $2000US in repairs right off the hop. My thinking is, if I'm going to have to pay to repair it right away, I might as well get one that is cheap. The best value may indeed be a fairly pristine example. If there are any of those for sale, I don't know where they are. There's none within a 5 hour drive of me in any classifieds, and hasn't been for at least the last 6 months. I think it's reasonable to assume that they are going to become less plentiful going forward rather than more.
If you look in the saabnet classifieds, there's a low mileage, manual wagon for $5800, but even that has issues listed. Plus it's an '03. The only other manual wagon is an '00 with a laundry list of problems for $1500. The $800 for the one I'm looking at doesn't seem all that bad, by comparison. Given that I have another 9-5, the worst case scenario is that it's a parts donor.
