> How do you compare Stage 1 to 2?
there is a definite "seat of the pants" difference. Stage 2 comes on harder and is quicker than stage 1, no question.
> Would a newer Aero with more power be similar to the older ones with Stage 1?
my '08 2.3T (with the Aero engine) does feel quicker than the '00 and '01 stock Aero's, but not shockingly so. I believe that the '00 and '01 Aero were spec'd at 230hp and the '08 at 260? It's clear that the early year specs were understated (for whatever reason) and the difference between an '01 Aero and an '08 Aero is surely no where near 30 hp. maybe 5 real life HP?
My Stage 1 '00 is definitely quicker than the '08 stock. The tuning increases the power for sure but the power also comes on harder. The first time you drive it you will be grinning.
> It seems torque steer could be and issue with much more power.
not really, it seems that the 9-5 manages it reasonably well. Even at stage 2 the car is well mannered and civilized under hard acceleration.
if you want torque steer drive a 9000 Aero! Or worse a stage 2 or 3 9000 Aero. Those cars are absolute beasts. They had massive torque steer and hard acceleration was downright violent. You were sure the car was trying to kill you and all you could do was hang on. fun :-)
I imagine that most people drive a 9-5 and complain about torque steer because they compare it to "normal cars". But I've been driving Saabs for almost 40 years now and I'd say that the 9-5 does a good job of managing it especially compared to other high powered FWD cars.
My Stage 2 '01 Aero is legit. The open intake and sport exhaust sound pretty great. I know the risks of an open intake and I do what I can to mitigate (oil the air filter frequently, replace the MAF every 80k mi or so, dont drive through standing water). I really like the intake sounds it makes.
The car looks mean (for a sedan anyway) so I seem to attract the occasional street racer. plenty of BMW Ms Audi's, modified Hondas and even a big dodge or two will goad me into a friendly race to the next stoplight. They are always shocked! I usually get a thumbs up and a few questions "what are you running?" or "did you upgrade the turbo?"
I'd say that for $250, Stage 1 is well worth it. Stage 2 too if you don't mind running an open intake.
