My guess is that Saab or GM was to lazy to develop a rubber boot to fit the odd shaped drive joint, like Volvo did, and just went with a standard one and creating a filler ring instead. Don't really see how that is more efficient but maybe the circular boot would fit a lot more of GM's other models.
I'm not a fan of it since there is more chances for leaks but it is what it is.
Volvo, and other brands, have the half moon thingies built into the boot.
